2018 Judge Applicant – Thais Munk

Online Nicknames

Introduction and Platform

I hope to be a bridgebuilding candidate as I like a lot of different things. I’ve played a lot of different games and like trying new games while also having my clear favourites (which include Warhammer Fantasy RolePlaying, Basic Roleplaying, FATE Core, In A Wicked Age, and various Scandinavian freeform games. I also play LARPS when given the chance. Somehow I’ve found time to be a total sucker for miniatures and terrain. I also like board games when given a chance.

I hope to be able to use this broad platform to accept games on their own terms without being caught up in my own preference. Most of all I hope to read a lot of games that I know people put A LOT of hard work and soul into, praising what is good and being honest about what I feel could be approved.

Why do you play/run RPGs?

Most of all I play RPGs for entertainment, for the drama, story and for fun. It simply speaks to me in a way that no other medium have managed to do. It is probably because I don’t get to make stuff up in the same way or put my own mark on the story, while also allowing others to do the same.

The ENnies requires a major commitment of time and energy. What resources do you have that will help you discharge these responsibilities? Will your gaming group or other individuals be assisting you? Does your family support you?

I currently have plenty of time, unfortunately being unemployed at the moment. I only have one gaming group, which takes place every other Sunday. It is therefore not a burden. I’ve also managed to pick up a university degree (Master of Political Science and Public Management). This means that I am very good at reading a lot of text fast, understanding and analyzing it.

Judging requires a great deal of critical thinking skills, communication with other judges, deadline management, organization, and storage space for the product received. What interests, experience, and skills do you bring that will make you a more effective judge?

I have previously judged games as part of a scenario writing competition at Fastaval (largest Danish convension), where contestants have 72 hours to write a game. This have given me good experience with judging games on their merits and quickly understanding what the premise of a game is.

This have also given me good skills for communicating with other judges and respecting a difference of opinion and taste.

What styles and genres of RPGs do you enjoy most? Are there any styles or genres that you do not enjoy? Which games best exemplify what you like? Do you consider yourself a particular system’s, publisher’s, or genre’s “fanboy/fangirl”?

I like games that are aware of what they want to do and where that purpose is clear thought the games.

I enjoy systems that are not too chunky. If I have to label myself a fanboy of something, it would probably be Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying, 1st and 2nd edition.

What games have you played in the past year? List up to 10 RPGs you have played the most. Which ones, if any, have you loved or hated?

Draker och Dæmoner (Swedish version of Basic Roleplaying, tranlated to Danish).
Other than that freeform games. I am also working on a possible Trail of Cthulhu-campaign at some point. I like the system, but It is not going to be anytime soon.

Briefly summarize the criteria you will use for judging products in the different categories.

The different categories IMO indicate what criteria we’re talking about. “Best Family Game” indicate a game that could be played with children of a young age and also still be fun for adults. Other than that I would award games that managed to do new things and make them work in practise.

How will you judge supplements or adventures for game systems whose core rules you are unfamiliar with or you believe are badly designed?

I have a huge network of other Danish geeks and gamers whom I can ask for advice, especially about games that I do know that much about. Again, I would use their fundamental premise as the starting point.

How would you like to see the ENnies change? What should remain inviolate?

As this is my first time I’m running for ENnies judge I do not have a strong opinion. This may of course change, but I am not the type of person to change things just for the sake of change.

BONUS: (optional) If you were an RPG, what would it be and would you play it?

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying 1st edition. A large sense of irony and a desire to tell quite dark stories. Would play.
