Introduction and Platform

Hello! I’m Eric Paquette, an eclectic gamer who loves a variety of games. I’m also a podcaster as one of the hosts of the Tome Show Book Club and convention organizer of CanGames, Canada’s longest running analog games convention.

I got my bacherlor’s degree in Biology and work for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, a Canadian government department, in finance.
Over the decades, I’ve played over 100 different RPGs of various types and read more than I’ve played. I’ve been a playtester of games over the decades and most recently for IGDN designers. Since GenCon 2016, I’ve been a one of their IGDN GMs.

I love the diversity of games available we have. One of my passions is helping folks find games which they will love to play.

Why do you play/run RPGs?

I play and run RPGs to explore stories and situations different than my own. Whether it is going to distant worlds or exploring portions of our history, I love the speculation and asking questions to see what will happen. I love seeing the consequences of action play out.

The ENnies requires a major commitment of time and energy. What resources do you have that will help you discharge these responsibilities? Will your gaming group or other individuals be assisting you? Does your family support you?

I have several local friends and contacts who enjoy games and are willing to test out products if need be. My spouse supports me in this endeavor. My only children are two wonderful cats who sometimes hang out with me while I read my rpg books.

Judging requires a great deal of critical thinking skills, communication with other judges, deadline management, organization, and storage space for the product received. What interests, experience, and skills do you bring that will make you a more effective judge?

My background in science and finance has given me skills to critically analyze a product. I have read a wide variety of rpg products over the decades and thus have seen the evolution of the industry.
I love making lists to prioritize what books to read. Additionally, I give myself goals to finish reading within a time period. I developed that to help me be ready for the Tome Show Book Club podcast. I have a spreadsheet of my rpg collection with those I’ve read and unread.
At work, we work on projects with deadlines and communicate frequently with others involved in those tasks.
I have a dedicated game room where I have my shelves of rpgs, board games, and other. I have space for more shelves to add more games.

What styles and genres of RPGs do you enjoy most? Are there any styles or genres that you do not enjoy? Which games best exemplify what you like? Do you consider yourself a particular system’s, publisher’s, or genre’s “fanboy/fangirl”?

I love whimsical games which are light on rules. Two games which I love are Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple and The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen.
I love innovative mechanics which engages with your decision making skills over just make a die roll. I love cooperative games where everyone contributes to the story like Microscope and Night Witches.
I’m a fan of games by Pelgrane Press, Atlas Games, and IGDN games publishers.

What games have you played in the past year? List up to 10 RPGs you have played the most. Which ones, if any, have you loved or hated?

Briefly summarize the criteria you will use for judging products in the different categories.
Two primary criteria which I will use is if the product brings innovation and creativity.
For best adventure, I will value how it presents its decision point and its flexibility for groups.
For art, I will value the craft and diversity in expression.
For aids and software, I will evaluate how it benefits the game.
For blogs and websites, I will evaluate how useful as a resource for gamers.
For cartography, I will evaluate how it graphically convey its information in a clear manner.
For books and games, I will evaluate the whole product and its contribution to the industry.
For miniatures, I will evaluate its sculpture and the tools it brings to help rpgs.
For monsters & adversaries, I will evaluate based on well you can bring it into a game.
For podcasts, I will evaluate on which present great and diverse insights into our industry and hobby.
For settings, I will evaluate based on how they engage the players to go change the status quo.
For game rules, I will evaluate how well it teaches how to play the game or use these rules.

How will you judge supplements or adventures for game systems whose core rules you are unfamiliar with or you believe are badly designed?

An adventure or supplement can be more than an addendum to the rules. I feel a supplement or adventure which depends heavily on its core rules may be doing itself a disservice.
If I feel the core rules are badly designed, I will evaluate based on how useful the product itself. The product may have something which can be used for other games. Alternatively, the product may offer optional rules which I find improves the core rules.
If I’m unfamiliar with the core rules, I will try to find a summary of those rules. If none are available, I will evaluate based on the quality and how useful it can be for rpgs in general.

How would you like to see the ENnies change? What should remain inviolate?

I would like to see more judge’s choices awards on top of the popular vote. The popular vote should remain as these are community awards which are important.

BONUS: (optional) If you were an RPG, what would it be and would you play it?
I would be a GM-shared rpg focused on telling whimsical stories of family and friends, whoever and wherever they are. I would play it.
