Comment on Alternative Voting: How Does it Work? by Dale Sheldon-Hess

I love these videos. There so… snappy.

But, there is a big mistake in this video. It’s not the author's fault, because it’s a very common error that is repeated all over the place by AV advocates.

Namely, the Alternative Vote STILL HAS SPOILERS.

I’ll illustrate by example:

Imagine just Gorilla, Leopard, and Tiger are running for King. Many Leopard-favoring voters have Gorilla as a second choice (mostly voters who would really rather Owl were running.)

40% Gorilla > Leopard > Tiger
15% Leopard > Gorilla > Tiger
10% Leopard > Tiger > Gorilla
35% Tiger > Leopard > Gorilla

By AV, Leopard is eliminated, and Gorilla wins, 55%:45% over Tiger.

But what if Tiger wasn’t running? Eliminate Tiger from every ballot and the results look like this:

40% Gorilla > Leopard
15% Leopard > Gorilla
10% Leopard > Gorilla
35% Leopard > Gorilla

Which results in Leopard winning, 60% to 40%.

To recap: If only Leopard and Gorilla run, Leopard wins. But if Tiger joins, he makes Leopard lose, so that Gorilla wins.

That’s a spoiler. AV has spoilers. The claim that AV does not have spoilers is not true.

There ARE single-winner voting systems which ACTUALLY do not have spoilers (and so may escape two-party domination and more commonly elect moderate candidates.) If that’s something that interest you, I encourage you to look into approval voting, which is one such method. I have more details on my blog, http://leastevil.blogspot.com
